Gaspar Becerra Art School
Descripción
The Gaspar Becerra School of Art is a public center for artistic education under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of the Junta de Andalucía. It is located where the San Basilio College once stood, founded by Saint John of the Cross on June 14, 1578.
The origin of the school dates back to 1910, when it was established as a School of Arts and Crafts following a report promoted by the Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts, Julio Burell y Cuéllar, and later approved by King Alfonso XIII by decree. In its early years, it was dependent on the University of Granada and became one of the main cultural references of the city, as well as playing a key role in the preservation of artisanal crafts such as artistic forging, stone and wood carving, typography, and bookbinding.
In 1966, the project for the current building was approved, specifically designed to house the school. The new facilities officially began to be used on November 2, 1969.
Throughout its history, numerous prestigious teachers and artists have been part of the faculty, contributing with their work and personality to the artistic development and identity of the school.
Currently, the center is located in an environment with a significant artisanal tradition and offers various teachings related to plastic arts and design. Among its educational offerings are the Arts Baccalaureate and several training cycles, both intermediate and higher level, linked to specialties such as Artistic Forging, Animation, Sculptural Techniques, and Advertising Graphics.
