Gaspar Becerra Exhibition Hall
Description
The Gaspar Becerra exhibition hall is a project sponsored by the City Council of Baeza, included in the Cultural Excellence Plan developed by the current Municipal Corporation. He was a great artist of the Renaissance, a period of maximum splendor for the city. Also the son of an artist, Antón Becerra, he completed his training in Italy (1550-1557), where he worked with artists such as Giorgio Vasari and Danielle da Volterra. Upon returning to Spain, he settled in Valladolid and began his great work in Spain, first creating the Main Altarpiece of the Cathedral of Astorga, and later being appointed court painter by Philip II. While at the court, he created the altarpiece of Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid, commissioned by Juan de Austria, and other works such as the Yacente Christ venerated in the aforementioned congregation. Also by royal commission, he created various paintings in the Alcázar of Madrid and in the Queen’s Towers of the Pardo Palace. The exhibition showcases the most representative images of his work and aims to pay him the tribute he deserves in the city where he was born. Being an Andalusian artist, he is perhaps more recognized in other parts of Spain. This is an opportunity not only to pay tribute to him, but also to facilitate his recognition and give it an educational and pedagogical character for those who visit the exhibition, allowing them to form an idea of the whole and the contribution that the brilliant author had for the rest of the creators of the time.
