La Casa del Vicario

San Juan de la Cruz lived in the Casa del Vicario (or Vicar’s House) for a time when he arrived in Baeza from El Calvario together with the first Carmelites. This building is in Calle Horno de la Merced, where the wall used to run. It has two storeys and a sombre ashlar façade with two doors, latticed windows, a balcony and a moulded porthole. The interior’s most striking feature is the door leading to the stairs, with a semicircular arch and keystone bracket. The vicar’s family coat of arms, with eight blades and two wolves, also stands out. The rear part has a courtyard that leads to part of the wall and a small tower known as Torrico.
